OFWGKTA - Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All

While browsing my favorite album news and review website http://www.pitchfork.com/, I came across a young rapper that goes by the name of Tyler, The Creator. Listening to this 20 year old rapper out of Los Angeles, you get the feel that he hasn’t had the most amazing childhood.

Much of the content of his first solo album Bastard, centers on his relationship with his father. This album sends a fresh new way of story telling. Packed full with 15 tracks, spanning a little over 55 minutes, this album’s diversity shows off Tyler’s creative talents. The title track “Bastard”, sets the pace rolling with a slow and steady biography on Tyler’s life.

With a “don’t give a fuck” attitude, Tyler shows us his true colors and that he tells stories, not recounts scenes of rape and murder in his life. But Tyler isn’t alone on this track either, featuring the likes of Earl Sweatshirt (who is nowhere to be found) and Hodgy Beats of MellowHype, Tyler and his friends slaughter the likes of what we call “modern hip-hop”. Here is Tyler’s new video Yonkers, from his new album Goblin, being dropped in spring 2011.

Looking more into Tyler, I found out he heads a young group of rappers that go by the name OFWGKTA (see title), that include the same rappers found featured on his album. This group of kids, and by kids I mean some of them are still in high school, are the biggest thing out right now. Known for their live performances and stage antics, this group sure does know how to give the audience a show. Just recently performing at SXSW in Austin, Texas, this group was praised for the shows.

More on the other members of the group, the ones that stood out to me were Hodgy Beats and Left Brain who make up the sub-group of MellowHype, and the mysterious likes of Mr. Earl Sweatshirt, who seems to be missing from the picture. Picked up by Fat Possum Records, MellowHype have two extraordinary albums out, and the second BLACKENEDWHITE, being re-released. Here is MellowHype on The Daily Habit.

Earl Sweatshirt’s self-titled album EARL, has been out for some time now and is some of the best raw rapping talent I’ve ever heard. At the age of 17, Earl has accomplished in writing that no one in Odd Future has. On the Odd Future website oddfuture.com, I’m struck with Free Earl all over the page. Looking farther into the mystery, it seems that Earl’s mother sent him to boarding school for rapping and making disturbing music videos. Earl is missed and will hopefully make a speedy return, his rhymes and raps are missed by all fans. With Coachella coming up in the next weekend, all attending will get to see if its Earl’s first chance to come back from the depths of school. Here is the video he was sent off for in the first place, the title track “Earl”.
